Let's dive into the fundamental principles that lay the groundwork for achieving your fitness goals.
1)ROM (Range of Motion)
Range of motion is your foundation, and probably the most overlooked when it comes to starting any exercise program. If you first focus on proper body mechanics it will mean better gains in both muscle building and cardio vascular fitness.
While short-term goals come from a wide range of motives like boosting self-confidence through outward appearance (#summerbod), hitting a personal record in one of your lifts, or improving your race time it’s important to not lose sight of the long-term. Everyone hopes to live well into old age and continuing to stay in good health through fitness can help support that. To continue to say active into old age it’s important that we project our joints which will in enhance our overall chances of staying mobile throughout our entire life.
2)Resistance Training
Resistance training is the meat of fitness, and the part that most are eager to start. The best approach to resistance training is to have an approach. This means you need to get specific with your goals. This where short-term goals thrive. Small improvements amount to a large sum over-time. I am here to help guide you in finding what works for you and to create small steps and celebrate small wins along the way to your own self-vision. Decide what that is now… Once that’s done then we can break resistance training down.
The best and most effective method is the one you enjoy! Why? Because it’s the one you are most likely to follow and turn into a consistent habit. When it comes to resistance training, or the other 2 R’s of Success, the key is to be patient with yourself and to trust the process.
3)Recovery
Sometimes doing less is more. Recovery is not always the sexiest of terms, and doing more might be what you think will yield progress faster but this is not always the case. Taking adequate time to rest & recover is so important because if you are always on the go, or always trying to do the most, you can and will burn out, or worse end up hurting yourself (and then be forced to rest).
Like practicing good ROM, proper recovery will help you yield a better quality of life both now and in the future. Always learn to listen to your body first and put your ego aside. Life is about balance, and as you stress the body through training you need to give yourself the time to adapt.
All in all if you hold these 3 R’s in mind as you begin your journey success will be inevitable.
